About Sils
Sils is an exhibition & project space based in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). The desire to form Sils emerged primarily from an observed gap within the Rotterdam art scene. The aim of Sils is to fill this gap by creating a vibrant non-commercial gallery, artist/curator-run space, curating a program with a national and international outlook. As well as programming exhibitions, we are also interested in establishing connections with similar spaces in other cities.
One of the main aims of Sils is to support the research and artistic practice of the invited artists. In addition to researching and seeking out selected artists for exhibitions, Sils has an open submission policy: artists are encouraged to submit their portfolios, which will be periodically reviewed by the committee members. Portfolios may be sent by post (for details see contact).
The gallery is managed and run by a committee of five experienced individuals from different backgrounds as artists and curators. The committee are:
- Teresa Iannotta (IT) works as an independent curator between Italy and the Netherlands. Her practice focuses on the promotion of young artists with a specific interest for site-specific works.
- Rachel Carey (US) is a visual artist based in Rotterdam. She is currently interested in the reconstruction of historical accounts that seem so distant, idealized or unbelievable that they have morphed into fiction. Rachel is also a recent graduate of the Piet Zwart Instituut and in her spare time writes political speeches for potatoes.
- Stefano Calligaro (IT) is an artist who works primarily on installation-based ideas focused on the perception of objects in the space. He also organizes events and projects connected to visual arts.
- David Stamp (UK) is a visual artist, graduate of the Piet Zwart Instituut in Rotterdam
- Kathrin Wolkowicz (DE/PL) is a Rotterdam based artist and filmmaker recently graduated from Piet Zwart Instituut. Her works explore the relation between text and image in videos, films, books and installations. Besides her own practice, Kathrin organizes screenings and film-events.
